Grotesque " Fall Into Decay " T shirt

From the diseased foundations of the early Swedish death metal underground comes Grotesque — the pre-At the Gates band fronted by the late Tomas “Goatspell” Lindberg.

Formed in Gothenburg during the late 1980s, Grotesque existed before the Swedish death metal sound had been polished, categorized, or exported to the world. Their music was primitive, blasphemous, and soaked in the influence of early death metal, black metal, and violent European thrash. The riffs crawled from a colder grave: raw, sinister, and steeped in the atmosphere of a scene still mutating beneath the surface.

The band’s 1989 rehearsal/demo, The Black Gate Is Closed, captured Grotesque in its most unfiltered form. Those early recordings, the cult Incantation EP, and additional material were later collected on In the Embrace of Evil—an essential document of the band’s short but enormously influential existence.

Grotesque would become one of the crucial roots of the Gothenburg death metal movement. After the band’s dissolution, vocalist Tomas Lindberg went on to co-found At the Gates, carrying that same scorched intensity into a new era of Swedish extreme music.

The “Fall Into Decay” shirt resurrects Grotesque at the point where Swedish death metal was still ugly, dangerous, and crawling through the underground. A tribute to one of Gothenburg’s earliest and most important death metal bands—and to the enduring legacy of Tomas Lindberg.
